Michael Hartman's Artist Statement

I guess I'm supposed to have one of these...

Artists Statement:

Why do I make music?

That's a good question. For a while I thought it was too difficult to answer. But it's very simple. Music is about letting go and reaching a state of being where you forget about time and space and the weight of the world and exist only in that moment. In that moment you are free. Music is transcendence.

Why do you make music?

Do you like to sing along?

David Byrne says singing is a trick to get people to listen to music longer than they would ordinarily.

He also said; there is no music in space.

I want to make music in space.

Music is friendship.

Through music (and art) we learn to understand each other. Through that understanding we develop respect. Based on that respect we build relationships and communities. By definition communities bring people together.

Am I being too emotional?

Music is fun.

I want to let go. I want to use music to get to that place where I exist only in the moment and am completely relaxed and free of self consciousness. I want to share that with other people.

Our mission is to build communities through music so that we may increase the universal understanding of our universe.

I'm dedicated to building programs that:

  • foster long term relationships among artists and audience members
  • cross cultural and physical boundaries
  • allow the audience to share in that feeling of transcendence
